Global wind power potential estimation

Global wind power estimation has been carried out by Enviroware using the GDAS data for years 2007 and 2008. The wind power is estimated at 50 m and 80 m above ground level starting from wind speed at 10 m above ground and applying a logarithmic profile. The roughness length needed in the logarihmic profile has been obtained from the Global Land Cover Facility.

The operating probability and the annual specific yield have been calculated for a hypothetical wind turbine with a rated power of 2000 kW, a blade diameter of 80 m, a cut-in wind speed of 3.5 m/s and a cut-out wind speed of 25 m/s. Wind turbines similar to this hypothetical one are, for example, the Gamesa G80, the REpower MM82, and the Vestas V80-2.0. The wind power class does not depend on the particular wind turbine, but only on the average wind speed.

The work is still in progress, therefore some of the maps might not cover the whole Earth. However they will be updated as soon as new results will be available.
Depending on the speed of your internet connection, the maps might require some time to show up, therefore be patient.
