Emissions from landfills

Management of waste is a global environmental problem. In Italy, in particular, the production of urban waste in the last years is constantly increasing (Rapporto Rifiuti 2005, APAT-ONR) and it has exceeded 500 kg per inhabitant per year. Part of the waste is stored in landfills, with consequences on several environmental aspects: landscape, soil, ground, atmosphere, etc. Enviroware deals with the atmospheric impact of landfills. Enviroware has the capabilities and the software tools to estimate, applying internationally recognised algorithms, the atmospheric emissions of gases emitted from landfills: methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOC). These gases are noxious for the environment for a number reasons: they are flammable (methane), they are responsible for the greenhouse effect (methane and carbon dioxide), they can generate disturbing odours, as some of the VOCs.
