Abstract

This article presents a general mathematical model for the study of the dispersion of heavy gases into the low atmosphere. The model describes the evolution of the field of concentration for the air-heavy gas mixture taking into consideration its thermal exchange with the surounding atmosphere and the ground, and the interaction with the wind field. A simplified version of the model was implemented in a new numerical code with the finite volumes method. The results of the sensitivity analysis to the variation of the more significant parameters are reported. Moreover the results of preliminary comparisons with the experimental data of two trials of the Thorney Island experiment are described.
